I came across this interesting video clip on youtube and it spoke volumes to my heart.
Here we find a little girl at a zoo in New Zealand initially flinching at the agression of a massive lion and then deciding to stare it down (albeit behind a protective glass barrier)!
A few things crossed my mind when I watched that video.
The first was Peter’s warning to believers in 1 Peter 5:8 which says, Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around LIKE a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
I highlighted the word LIKE in that scipture because we tend to forget to put things in perspective with regards to the devil. He is not a roaring lion. He is only like one! Big difference. You see, when it comes to lions in the spirit realm, there’s only one Lion that really matters. In fact, one of His official titles is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to those who are wondering.
He dealt Satan a decisive blow at the cross and essentially eliminated the powers of fear and death that he used to intimidate mankind. The bible confirms this in several places but one scripture that nicely depicts this truth is Colossians 2:15, which says, And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Did you know that the devil cannot just pounce on a child of God at his whim? He is on a leash and has to ask permission from God first. Like that lion in the video clip, a barrier separates you from the wiles of the devil. That barrier is the blood of Jesus, by which we overcome the enemy. In Luke 22:31, Jesus gave Peter a heads up when He warned, Simon, Simon, (Peter), listen! Satan has asked excessively that all of you be given up to him out of the power and keeping of God, that he might sift all of you like grain, But I have prayed especially for you (Peter), that your own faith may not fail; and when you yourself have turned again, strengthen and establish your brethren. Notice that Satan had to ask for permission first before attempting to attack the faith of the disciples.
In another insightful story that clearly illustrates the sovereignty of God over all including the devil, read Job chapters 1 and 2. The context is very intriguing but the key verses that reveal what I’ve been emphasising can be found in Job 1:9-12, which says, “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face. The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself DO NOT LAY A FINGER.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
Once again, we see that Satan is definitely on a leash when it comes to the children of God. This is contrary to the popular view that Satan has been left to run amok in the world and God has somehow lost control of everything. That little girl somehow understood that the lion could not get past that barrier. She knew she was safe and although she flinched at first, boldness grew within her and she was able to stand her ground. We could learn a lot from her response. It is true that sometimes the enemy throws the kitchen sink at us and we may flinch momentarily but a righteous man or woman was never meant to stay down for too long. He or she rises up again on the wings of faith based on a revelation of who Christ is and the victory He has wrought for them.
Ephesians 6:13 says, Therefore put on God’s complete armour, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day of danger, and, having done all the crisis demands, to stand firmly in your place. Like that little girl, we ought to stand in the face of evil and danger, knowing that the armour of God protects us from the pretend lion. Remember that he isn’t one. He is only LIKE one.
I don’t know what you may be going through at this point in time but I hope I have been able to encourage you to see things from a different perspective. You are not a helpless victim waiting and hoping that the devil does not notice and attack you. No way! You are much more than that. You are a mighty conqueror in Christ Jesus and the demons tremble when you wield your inherited spiritual authority in faith and understanding.
If you have an unhealthy fear of the enemy then perhaps you need to change your seat! Yes, change your seat and see him from a new vantage point. See him for what he really is. A defeated foe who should not be underestimated but certainly not feared or compared to the far superior power of Christ. Ephesians 2:6 tells us that we are now jointly seated with Christ in the heavenlies. Everything else is under His feet and ours by default. Roaring lion? What roaring lion? God is in absolute control and if He is Lord of your life then there’s nothing to fear.
